What is CHD?
CHD is the most common birth defect, affecting nearly 1 in 100 babies born in the United States each year, according to the CDC. It encompasses a range of structural issues in the heart that are present at birth. Despite its prevalence, CHD remains severely underfunded when it comes to research and support compared to other childhood conditions.
Wisconsin’s Favorite CHD Organization: Project Bubaloo
Project Bubaloo highlights staggering statistics that underline the urgency for CHD awareness and funding:
- CHD is the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths.
- 25% of babies born with CHD require life-saving surgery or interventions before their first birthday.
- Even with treatment, CHD is a lifelong condition, often requiring additional surgeries and care as children grow.
