Wisconsin Folklore: Tales from the Northwoods | Lakewish Favorites

At Lakewish, we believe that every adventure is made better by the stories we collect along the way—especially the ones that are steeped in mystery and tradition. Wisconsin’s Northwoods is rich with folklore, and the stories of our area reflect the spirit of adventure, the beauty of the landscape, and the intriguing history of the region. From famous gangsters to Bigfoot, these local legends are an integral part of what makes Wisconsin so captivating.

Here are some of our favorite tales from Wisconsin:

Little Bohemia Lodge: The Legendary Gangster Hideout

If you're traveling to Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, a visit to Little Bohemia Lodge is a must for history buffs and fans of the infamous gangster era. Little Bohemia became infamous in 1934 when it was the site of a dramatic shootout between John Dillinger, his gang, and the FBI. Dillinger, one of the most notorious bank robbers of the time, had been using the lodge as a hideout when the FBI raided the location.

On that fateful day, agents attempted to arrest Dillinger, but the gangsters ambushed them, leading to a fierce gun battle. Though Dillinger and his gang managed to escape, the shootout has become a part of local legend, cementing the lodge’s place in Wisconsin folklore.

Today, Little Bohemia Lodge operates as a restaurant and historic site, where visitors can learn more about the shootout and the role the lodge played in the story of the Midwestern gangsters. With displays commemorating the event and a scenic setting by the lake, it’s a perfect spot for those seeking a mix of history and mystery.

The Hodag: The Ferocious Beast Born from the Tall Tales of Lumberjacks

The story begins in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, in the late 19th century. According to lore, the Hodag was a fearsome creature born from the embers of Paul Bunyan’s dying ox, Babe. As the story goes, when Babe was burned in a funeral pyre, his ashes gave rise to the Hodag—a monstrous beast with glowing eyes, sharp horns, a row of jagged spines down its back, and a powerful tail that could level trees.

Despite its mythical (and man-made) origins, the Hodag refused to fade into legend. Today, it remains the official mascot of Rhinelander, and a massive green Hodag statue greets visitors at the city entrance. The creature is celebrated in festivals, local businesses, and sports teams, and it even has a place in pop culture as one of Wisconsin’s most beloved folklore figures.

I remember my first encounter with the Hodag during a trip up north, I was 8 or 9.  I saw it in a museum and was astounded! I came back from the trip and told my  teacher all about this amazing and crazy creature my dad told me was real! She let me know the Hodag was a myth and I was so bummed. But - is it really?

Whether you believe in the lore of the Hodag or not: if you ever find yourself on a quiet night in the Northwoods, and you hear an eerie growl through the trees—just maybe, the Hodag still watches. 👀🌲

Summerwind Mansion: A Haunting History in Land ’O Lakes, WI

Another piece of Wisconsin folklore comes from Summerwind Mansion, located in Land ‘O Lakes, Wisconsin. This once-grand estate has become one of the state’s most infamous haunted locations. Built in the early 1900s as a private retreat, Summerwind was home to several owners throughout its history, but it is most known for its eerie occurrences during the time of Robert Patterson, a wealthy industrialist.

According to legend, Patterson and his family experienced strange and unsettling events, including unexplained voices, ghostly apparitions, and eerie sounds that haunted the mansion. These spooky happenings have led Summerwind Mansion to earn its reputation as one of the most haunted spots in Wisconsin.

Over time, the mansion fell into disrepair, and after a fire in the 1980s, much of the property was left in ruins. Still, the ghost stories live on, and many people claim to experience paranormal activity at the site. The mansion’s eerie legacy has become a popular spot for ghost hunters and curious visitors, adding to the mystique of the Northwoods.

The Mystery of Bigfoot in Wisconsin’s Northwoods

Wisconsin is home to its own version of a legendary creature—the elusive Bigfoot, or Sasquatch. While sightings of this mysterious, ape-like creature have been reported across the United States, the dense forests of Northern Wisconsin, particularly areas like the Chequamegon National Forest, are known hotspots for Bigfoot enthusiasts. Over the years, there have been numerous reports of strange noises, large footprints, and even blurry photos, all pointing to the possibility that Bigfoot may be lurking in the shadows of the Northwoods.

Though no conclusive proof has been found, locals and adventurers alike continue to share stories of their eerie encounters in Wisconsin’s wild forests, and have made a market out of bigfoot apparel. Whether you’re hiking through the woods or sipping bourbon around the bonfire by one of the region's many lakes, it’s easy to imagine that Bigfoot could be just beyond the trees, watching from a distance. The mystery surrounding Bigfoot adds another layer of intrigue to the rich folklore of Wisconsin, making it the perfect tale for those who love adventure and the thrill of the unknown.
